NEW DELHI: Finance minister Arun Jaitley will unveil the Narendra Modi government's much-anticipated budget for the next fiscal year on February 28. The budget session of Parliament will begin on February 23, the railway budget will be presented on February 26 and the Economic Survey the next day.

The dates were decided at a meeting held by the cabinet committee on parliamentary affairs and recommended to the President. Parliament will have a special sitting on Saturday, usually a holiday, for Jaitley's first fullfledged budget.

The first part of the budget session will end on March 20. The second part will commence after a month-long recess on April 20 and the session will conclude on May 8, officials said. Parliamentary committees will examine demands for grants of various ministries during the recess.

The motion of thanks to the President's address will be debated on February 24 and 25. The budget session is additionally significant as there will be at least eight ordinances, including those on raising the overseas investment limit in insurance and e-auctioning of coal mines, that will need to be ratified. The government had to resort to ordinances after its legislative efforts were frustrated by opposition in the Rajya Sabha.
