Chennai Literary Festival
Chennai, 10th Jan 2018: The 3-day Chennai Literary Festival came to a close today (10th January 2018) with the distribution of prizes to the winners of the various literary events and competitions held across several colleges in and around the city as part of the carnival. Mr. C. Sylendra Babu I.P.S., Additional Director General of Police, Railways, was the Chief Guest of the valedictory event that took place at Ethiraj College for Women. Mr. V.M. Muralidharan, Chairman, Ethiraj College Trust, was the Guest of Honor.
Speeches by prominent speakers and cultural events marked the day. Mr. R.J. Kumaravel, President, Mr. Sudhakar, Secretary, Mrs. Latha Rajan, Past President and Mr. G. Olivannan, Founder, of Chennai Literary Festival (CLF) were others present.
Organized by Chennai Literary Association (CLA), the literary festival was inaugurated on 8th January 2018 at University of Madras by its Vice Chancellor Thiru P. Duraisamy. Students of the University presented an English play as part of the inaugural day celebrations.
The carnival on 9th January 2018 witnessed participation of around 2500 college students and public in the 21 workshops conducted in 16 Colleges and including `Digital Literature’ at St Thomas College for Arts and Sciences, `Journalistic Writing’ at Loyola College, `Shakespeare in India’ at Madras Christian College, ‘Thiraikalaiyum Ilakiyamum’ at Pachaiyappas College, `Film and Literature’ at Shri Krishnasamy College for Women, Creative Writing at Quaid-E-Millath Government College for Women, Theatre Workshop at Annai Violet Arts & Science College and Story Telling at Alpha Arts & Science College.
“As our four successful editions in the past, this edition also saw huge participation of youth, a heartening response in the scenario of today’s world dominated by electronic media. The objective behind Chennai Literary Festival is to make more and more people experience the pleasure of reading and add value to their lives,” said Mr. R.J. Kumaravel.
As a precursor to the 3-day festival, various literary events happened at Dr. MGR-Janaki College of Arts & Sciences for women on the 9th December 2017, witnessing participation of around 1500 students from several colleges from Chennai and Bengaluru. Picture Story Writing, Quiz (Tamil and English), Mono-acting, Story Writing, Stage a Scene, Sing a Story, Sing your Lyrics, Oratory, Identify the Writer, Dramatic Monologue, etc., were among the 22 activities of the day.
Cash prizes of around Rs. 1 lakh and certificates were given away to the first, second and third place winners, of each of the 22 events conducted. Moreover, participation certificates were given away to close to 4000 participants of all the events and workshops conducted as part of the festival.
