VELLORE: Two men have been arrested for hunting a monitor lizard in Kallapatti reserve forest in Tamil Nadu.

Ranger of Gudiyattam range said M Sekar, 45, and K Velu, 24, of Sentrampalli village in Katpadi taluk were arrested when they were carrying the carcass of a monitor lizard, weighing 1.4 kg.

"The duo hunted the reptile for its meat. We seized the carcass and a two-wheeler from the accused," Ranger said.

Monitor lizard is a protected reptile under Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972. "Hunting the reptile is a non-bailable offence. A maximum of 7.5 years imprisonment will be awarded to the poachers, besides a penalty of Rs 25,000," he added.

Forest officials registered a case against the duo.
